Most of the world knew the earth was round. Exception was Central Europe influenced by Catholic Church policy.
Circumference of the earth had been calculated 600 years before Columbus.
Sailors and coastal Atlantic were aware of the land mass.
Sailors have been making longer trips already.
Also American Indians who immigrated first were already here.
They couldn’t justify sending enough ships to protect themselves from the natives.
Columbus didn’t land on the continent he landed on San Salvador which permitted him to land to a smaller group with less opposition who were accustomed with trade.
What he did discover was landing safely and method for beginning trade taking resources and getting out alive.
Eventually Spain and Portugal sent enough ships and soldiers to establish safe beachheads, colonization and exploration.
What cracks me up with these Mexicans and their new La Raza plan to ” colonize” border states like Calif, Arizona, Texas and more is claiming their indigenous people.
The indigenous people were not Spanish or Portuguese. They did not speak Spanish and were not Catholics or Christians. They are European decent like everyone else. In fact less assimilated in South America than America so spare us the race baiting too.
