Federal court upholds Texas ‘sanctuary city’ law that allows police to ask about citizenship when they make arrests

Texas past the first of its kind law in an effort to crack down on illegal immigration
The law prescribes jail for police chiefs, sheriffs and possibly frontline officers who fail to cooperate over U.S. immigration
Also allows police to ask about immigration status during a lawful detention, such as traffic stops
Ruling in the federal Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals upholds most of the law
Plaintiffs including cities of Houston, Dallas and Austin sued, arguing the law violates their free speech rights to criticize policy
The cities say they abide by all legal U.S. detainer requests
