Parrots

Years ago, before cellphones, my friend’s teenage son used the house phone as his ‘home base contact’.  Whenever the phone rang, it was always for Jeremy, so everyone would just yell “Jeremy, Telephone!” whenever the phone rang and make him answer the phone himself.  The ensuing conversation was always full of expletives and obscene comments.   Soon the bird took up the conversation and every time the phone would ring, the bird would yell,  “Jeremy… Telephone!   F#*# You!  F#*# You!”

My little green-cheek conure has developed quite a repertoire and I have to watch what is said around him.  He’s human-bonded and very attentive and imitates all the sounds he hears around him.  He knows his own name… Pepe’…. and my name and my friend’s name and calls us by name when he wants something…  “Pepe’  Chip!” for a corn chip treat to gnaw on.  So my (low class) friend would sometimes fart, and blame it on the bird making that sound and exclaim “Pepe’!”

Sure enough… last week when he visited the bird made a stunning fart sound and exclaimed “Pepe’!”
