part: What percentage of sales are done online?

This statistic shows retail e-commerce sales as a percent of total retail sales in United States from 2013 to 2017, and a forecast until 2021. In 2017, e-commerce sales accounted for 9 percent of all retail sales in United States, this figure is expected to reach 12.4 percent in 2020.

part: This means that ecommerce now accounts for 14.3% of total retail sales when factoring out the sale of items not normally purchased online, such as fuel, automobiles and sales in restaurants.

A decade in review: Ecommerce sales vs. total retail sales 2012-2021

part: The truth is, right now, there is only one online retail company that features among the top 10 US retailers — Amazon, Inc. And even then, it ranks only 7th in retail sales, behind competitors such as Walmart, Costco, and Walgreens.

Indeed, even Amazon seems to be trying to make the case for physical retailers. Its recent acquisition of Whole Foods for almost US$14 billion, in addition to the several brick-and-mortar bookshops it has already opened in the US, give away the impression that the company believes a successful strategy for the future includes a combination of online and offline.

It is estimated that in 2020, in the US, more than 80% of retail sales will still happen within physical stores.
