The NIH partnered with Moderna in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic to develop a vaccine. The final phase of testing began on 27 July with 30,000 volunteers assigned to two groups — one receiving the mRNA-1273 vaccine and the other receiving salt water injections with 150 cases of COVID-19 administered amongst the participants.[35]
