After winning the silver fix, CME goes for the gold

The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) confirmed Thursday its intention to bid for the administration of the century-old London gold fix benchmark in partnership with ThomsonReuters.

Floridagold – yeah those numbers are pretty much impossible to believe. MSFT laying off 18K people, stock is up but how is that good for the economy?

Ipso – No doubt we are in the process of being isolated from most of the rest of the globe. Things will really escalate if Germany or the Saudi’s thumb their noses at the USD. When it happens the USD destruction will take 99.9% of the US population totally by surprise.

Farmboy – is there a bear in the room? All I’ve seen is a little frog being chased by some gal on a broom! 🙂

Once again the shares are just begging the metals to catch a bid.

Construction of New U.S. Homes Declines on Plunge in South

Beginning home construction unexpectedly declined in June to a nine-month low as a record plunge in the South swamped gains in the rest of the U.S.

Housing starts fell 9.3 percent to an 893,000 annualized rate from a 985,000 pace in May that was weaker than initially estimated, figures from the Commerce Department showed today in Washington. The median estimate of 79 economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for a 1.02 million rate.

23.8 vs. 17.2 last month. Something doesn’t compute. That’s got to be one of the highest on record, totally out of sorts with the other eco data. Looks like they’re going to try to keep the cap at $1305 today.

Russian Bonds, Stocks, Ruble Tumble On Latest US Sanctions

The Russian Ruble slumped 1.6% today, its biggest drop in over 4 months as investors kneejerk-reacted to the US latest round of restricted-funding-access sanctions. The Ruble is back at 2-month lows against the USD. The bonds of several of the sanctioned companies are also breaking down with Rosneft yields up 89bps at 6.22% and Novatek yields surging to 6.44% as even though Fitch confirms these firms can manage their own cash needs through 2015, as one analyst notes, “the lack of ability to raise long-term dollar funding will become a big economic limitation for all of them.” The broad Russian stock market is also tumbling, down to 2-month lows (though still notably above the US markets since sanctions began).

Sanctions 3.0 are having their normal short-term negative effect…
