For 45 years the “Sugar Cane Train”… a 3-foot narrow gauge train, has plied the leftover rails of the West Maui sugar cane fields. Today my friends on Maui island informed me that the Lahaina, Kaanapali, & Pacific train will cease operations next friday afternoon. Rising costs and unprofitability were cited as reasons for the demise of the little tourist railroad… the only regularly operating train in Hawaii.
If you are a real die-hard history buff, you still have time to book a flight to Maui and catch a ride and pictures before next friday.
