Unlike now where most western families have 2 or less children, in the fifties most families had more than 2 children. I remember when the pill first came out the experts all said that it would mean happier marriages, less divorce, less abortions, wanted children etc. The pope at that time Paul said to the contrary it would increase, not lessen divorce, abortions etc. Of course he was ridiculed by the media and even from some of his own bishops at the time.
