I reckon they had to let a few boulders tumble into the riverbed when they built the rail grade through that part of the canyon. And just a few miles east of this part of the Cheakamus River canyon is the magnificent volcanic peak, Mount Garibaldi. Attached is a view of Garibaldi that was taken by Mrs. Equiz when we flew into the Whistler ski area in August 2012, to re-visit the subalpine forest study plots on the lower slopes of Garibaldi where we had spent time documenting vegetation conditions 50 years earlier, between 1959 and 1962. It is very attractive and geologically interesting landscape. We feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to spend time on field work in that region.
The attached view of Mount Garibaldi is looking at the east side of the peak, so Cheakamus valley and the rail line are to the west side of the peak, in the mist-filled valley at the upper right side of the photo. Cheers. Equiz
