The 1950s saw the slow conversion from steam to diesel.  Some later steamers were oil fired… I don’t recall exactly about this “Big Boy” if it was oiled, but most were still coal.   EMD produced the first diesels around 1949, and by 1960 there were almost no steamers left working..
