Following the end of a horrible week for petroleum importers (not to mention shale producers) despite WTI briefly dipping under $40 (wasn’t this supposed to be great news for the US economy?) we have the start of a just as ugly week for the Persian Gulf oil exporters, whose Sunday market open can be described as a continuation of last week’s broad risk carnage, and where Saudi Arabia, until recently the region’s best performing market, is now down 10% for the year and down 30% compared to 12 months ago.

Basically what Armstrong is spewing forth is a buy the dips theory. We expect to hear more of this from the msm shortly. Some of that has already started as pundits assure us that a 10% type correction is both healthy necessary so that the market can recover and make new all time highs. We must have rebound rally at some point as a continuation of 1000 point weekly declines would completely wipe out the Dow in just 17 weeks. So, rebound we shall have and only after it turns back down will we see that all that was accomplished was to make a LOWER high.

This streaking artifact only happens with digital, solid-state cameras that have only become common in the past decade or two. This streaking effect does not happen with photographic film and chemical developement, so no… it would not have been reported back in the ‘old days’.

I bow to your professional expertise. A case of only believing half of what you see. I’d like to know what those people taking those pictures actually were taking a picture of. If as you said they were unaware and didn’t see the streak or beam until after taking the picture it would sure add credibility to what you say. On the other hand, if they were actually photographing the streak or beam it would certainly suggest something other than a trick of photography. In this case I guess we’ll never know. Maya=your learned response has only one problem…if the shafts are due to some defect or some odd angle in the photographic device, then they would have been reported–on a widespread basis–round the world, for many years…wouldn’t they?
Good questions… ones I also asked myself. Yes… it is possible for the cloud image overlay to ‘modulate’ the streak as it is shifted off. For the reflections on the water… think of the water as a mirror. It sees the lightning flash also, and the water pool image also overloads the sensor. In the case of the puddles in the foreground, there is just enough light to make the sensor streak ‘fuzzy’ but not a solid streak to the edge of the plate… so you can make out the dark ground around the puddle. That one is a bit different, but there are many complexities to the optical and electrical microstructure of the sensor plate.. many variations… that can cause responses like this.
In TV cameras for field use, they go to great pains to eliminate this streaking effect in the design of the CMOS sensor plate. They are expensive, and will still streak if you catch the sun with too wide an exposure. The personal still cameras for consumer use use cheap CMOS designs that work OK under “Normal” conditions, but no attempt is made to supress these out-of-bounds bright spots. They are all a bit different, depending on chip design.

I went back and reviewed the photos again and it brings to mind a couple questions.
Would your explanation also cover the fact that some of the flashes you mention seem to be partially behind the clouds in the picture?? If it is a flash as you describe it seems they should be totally in the foreground.
Also, would the flash also include the reflection in the water as shown in some of the photos?? They appear to be actual reflections and not a continuation of a flash.
I bow to your superior knowledge and admit I have zero experience with photography but those two things do not compute in my mind.
