tonight there is a total lunar eclipse ( the earth’s shadow falls on the moon) for all of north america. this is called a “blood moon” because the only light reaching the moon – and reflected back to earth is reddish colored from passing through earth’s atmosphere, creating an effect similar to sunrise or sunset. this “blood moon” coincides with a “super mooon” in which luna is at the closest point to earth in her orbit, and appears up to fourteen percent larger than usual. a rare and beautiful natural spectacle.
that’s the good news. the bad news is that there is a large mass of warm, humid air moving in from the gulf of mexico, causing cloud cover over much of the southeast. near total cloud cover here in the deep south. 🙁
