I have discovered that I was an ‘exception’ in the workforce. Except for a brief stint in the Army, I have worked my entire life in the private sector, providing highly skilled technical expertise. It worked until it didn’t… at 63 my job was jettisoned by foolhardy ‘management’ who no longer valued my technical expertise…. and they will suffer because of it. But management doesn’t care. Their business model is to ‘strip & flip’ outfits. They will find a greater fool to profit from when they sell the stripped out business… nevermind that it only works sometimes. The next sucker can spend the money to fix the things that they ‘saved’ on.
I had hoped to keep on working past a normal retirement age. Now as I find myself forced into early retirement I look around me for more work, and find most… maybe 95% of the jobs available to me with my skill set… are government contractor jobs… many in support of the military. I look around at my friends, neighbors, and acquaintances, and I also find that the great majority of them are sucking off the government & taxpayers teat for their jobs. But at my age, I’m just not going to jump thru the hoops and personal invasions to get a security clearance, background checks, pee tests. I guess I’m doomed to early retirement. There are no decent private-sector jobs to be had anymore. Everyone I know wants to angle for the public pension at the end of their rainbow. Most cannot see that the system is unsustainable and will surely collapse before they get there. Hell, I’m even worried about social security collapsing before I die.
I guess I have my definition of success… a paid up house and jungle yard with fruit trees where I can grow veggies & raise chickens, with lots of rainfall. And it’s in Hawaii !
