First-time weekly jobless claims in the U.S. fell by 4,000 to a seasonally adjusted 264,000 during the week to Saturday, the Labor Department said Thursday.
Consensus expectations compiled by various news organizations called for initial claims to be slightly higher, around 269,000. The government revised prior week’s tally by 1,000 to 268,000.
The level of weekly jobless claims continues to expand its record low levels. The Labor Department said last week was the 66th consecutive with initial claims below 300,000, the longest streak since 1973. There were no special factors impacting this week’s initial claims, officials added.
Meanwhile, the four-week moving average for new claims – often viewed as a more reliable measure of the labor market since it smoothens out week-to-week volatility – was down by 7,500 claims to 269,500.”
