Florida mosque removed as polling site after anti-Islamic backlash

A Florida mosque has been removed as a polling station for the 2016 election after local officials received complaints and threats of violence.
The Islamic Center of Boca Raton had planned to host a polling site for the state’s primary in August and the general election in November.
Officials rescinded the invite, drawing sharp criticism from Florida lawmakers who said it reinforced religious discrimination.
The site was moved to a nearby library.
County Elections Supervisor Susan Bucher said she moved the site after receiving about 50 complaints from people who said they did not want to vote in a mosque.
The Islamic Center has been used as a polling station at least since 2010, the Washington Post reported.
Democratic US Representatives Ted Deutch and Lois Frankel released statements opposing the move.
“If we are going to use places of worship as polling places, we should not discriminate,” Mr Deutch said.
It is unclear how many houses of worship are used as polling places across the country, but churches are often selected as host sites because of their large auditoriums and parking lots.
Mosques in California, Iowa, Pennsylvania and Ohio have served as polling places, including one that has been used since at least 2004, according to the AP news agency.

‘Many dead’ as lorry hits crowd in Nice

A lorry has struck a crowd during Bastille Day celebrations in the southern French city of Nice, killing about 60 people, officials are quoted as saying by local media.
The incident took place on the famous Promenade des Anglais during a firework display.
One image on Twitter showed about a dozen people lying on the street.
The local prefecture has urged people in the area to remain indoors, calling the incident “an attack”.
Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi said that “a lorry driver appears to have killed dozens of people”.
Sebastien Humbert, the prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes region, told France’s BFM TV that the lorry driver had been shot dead.
French media later quoted Nice prosecutors as saying that about 60 people were dead.
The mayor and police urged residents to stay indoors.
French President Francois Hollande was returning back to Paris for crisis talks in the capital, his office said. Mr Hollande was in the southern city of Avignon on a private visit.
Some reports spoke of shots being exchanged between police and the occupants of the lorry but these have not been confirmed.
Social media video showed people running through the streets in panic following the incident.
A journalist with the Nice Matin newspaper reported from the scene that there was “a lot of blood and without doubt many injured”.
An Agence France-Presse reporter said the incident took place as the firework display was ending, adding: “We saw people hit and bits of debris flying around.”
Another image on Twitter showed a white lorry stopped in the middle of the promenade with damage to its front, and four police officers observing it while taking cover behind a palm tree.
One eyewitness told BFM TV: “Everyone was calling run, run, run there’s an attack run, run, run. We heard some shots. We thought they were fireworks because it’s the 14th of July.
“There was great panic. We were running too because we didn’t want to stick around and we went into a hotel to get to safety. ”
Another witness, Roy Calley told the BBC that there were “thousands of people on the promenade” when the incident happened.

But allow me to point out some minor differences betwixt our two struggles. No offense intended of course. But you Brits are well mannered to the extreme, always have been. I remember the stories of my youth about how during our first struggle for freedom your troops wore bright red coats and marched in straight lines while we took pot shots from behind trees and rocks. Kinda cowardly of us I know, but hey, it worked. I am surprised you did not offer to reload our muskets for us.
Im guessing it was those manners that inspired Obama to give 150 Billion to the Iranians recently which by the way still continue to chant ‘Death to America’. Off the top of my head I cannot think of any other reason why he would have donated to that bunch of lunatics.
And I truly admire the traditional sportsmanlike conduct you folks exhibit. You win graciously even offering to shake hands with your defeated opponents. Americans once had such upbringing, but I am afraid even our politics has turned into a blood sport.
