If you dive best to do it in summer.Heed warning of strong undertow areas.  If you want to see the big waves go in winter. Find the local places to eat. More fun cheaper and can be better. I remember some guy staying in a high end hotel and paid 50 bucks for a chicken dinner that wasn’t so good while I just had about of fresh sea food for 7 bucks and mai tai with music for one dollar. PS I had a old friend years ago Hawaiian who was born and raised in Hilo. She told me some stories including standing on a hill watching a tidal wave come in. Lost track of her she’d be about 80 now was about the age of my mother. She would try to teach me hawaiian dances she loved to dance. Very Hawaiian Another said well where ever you go there’s gonna be something like hurricanes earthquakes fires. I almost said yeah but not all at once lol Still risk reward depending on who you are.

I know your in lava level 2 because I looked at that area as well as other islands. People don’t realize that you can’t just move there without considering those things.  I heard that there are only a few that cover it including Lloyds of London but is expensive and usually hurricane and flood are extra. That before the last one those who did have it locally could keep it but no more new policies. That it’s impossible to get in level 1. Some have homes they can move. To lower your insurance you might be able to get a rider to exempt fire by volcano if you think your safe. But you know how that can go. Fire insurance (lava is considered ‘fire’) is based on the zone.  Zone 1 is the rift-ridge with craters from recent historic eruptions, where a vent could open up at any time.  Zone 2 is in the downslope flow areas from zone 1.   Zone 3 is further out still, and historically safer.  I’m in Zone 2…. very near the arbitrary zone 3 line.

Commercial national insurance will not touch these areas for risk.  This makes it difficult to obtain a mortgage to buy property here.  The state sponsored a local insurance company to offer fire risk insurance to homeowners in these areas, but it is expensive.

I have no mortgage… cashed out my ‘retirement funds’ and paid cash for my property.  I originally planned to rent out the property so I got the state Fire insurance.    Annual premium around $2700 for about $220k of coverage.  I may not continue that next year as it amounts to 10% or more of my annual SS income.  The lava risk for my area is decreasing now as the flow is going in a different direction.  Topographic analysis suggests that the flow would miss my house if it came down thru this area anyway.

I have replaced all my electrical outlets and fixed electrical fire hazards.  New stove.  Fire extinguishers in kitchen and garage areas.  So I’m in good shape against a domestic fire possibility.  I think I will save the fire insurance premium next year.  Lava won’t be coming to my house in my lifetime is my bet.

I have some GSS on hand, and I was just looking at it, and thinking the same thing. It may be starting back up and I should buy a little more. I jumped on GSV, on highs with a half portion, and it went higher. Something going on with it. Maybe a take over or something. Momentum players?
