His anti-trump position has not gone well with the new core Republicans and he does not believe he would get the 218 votes to remain as speaker. Ryan is looking like the first casualty of this election regardless of who wins. There is a growing resentment of him among the new real Republicans who reject the establishment including the Tea Party who have always been marginalized first by Boehner and now by Ryan.
