Loading ...As I said , I was a timid kid in a new environment , so I just let sleeping dogs lie after the event , grateful to be left alone , and it did not help that I was the kid with the highest grades in my class .
It became a bit funny a couple of years later . The grandson of the nation’s former ambassador to Japan was in my class and always was in the number two spot grade-wise . Every time his father saw me , he would come out with a thinly veiled insult , because his ‘elite’ son could never best me , the ragamuffin . Sometimes I think the teachers were deliberately helping me out , as the underdog .
In the mid-East , we have one culture which has been at war with the rest of humanity for 1400 years , and which never forgets their losses , because they are schooled by clerics who stir the resentment . Westerners are not exposed very much to that history during their education and tend to be ignorant of it . Today we saw another example of that ongoing war , in Stockholm .
