about general (black jack) pershing when he was in charge of u.s. troops fighting the islamic moro insurgents in the philippines sometime early in the last century.
the story tells of twelve moro guerrillas who were captured. pershing had ten posts erected, and ten of the guerrillas tied to them. the other two guerrillas were shackled to chairs so that they could watch the proceedings. ten graves were dug, ten pigs slaughtered and skinned. before the firing squad executed the guerrillas, they coated the cartridges with the gore of the pigs. the pig blood coated bullets were then fired into the ten who were tied to the posts. .
when the bodies were cut down, they were each sewn up into one of the pigskins and thrown in a grave. a pig carcass was thrown in on top of each dead guerilla, and the graves were closed.
pershing then turned to the two remaining guerrillas and told them through an interpereter, “i want you to tell your friends what you have seen here today.” they were then unshackled and released.
of course this would not be politically correct today. as luck would have it, the present philipine president doesn’t seem to give a rat’s ass about political correctness.
