March 3, 1994 my wife was killed in a head-on collision with a logging truck on the highway. During a process of grieving I went through a period of automatic writing for the next few months where I was “given” the words to many songs/poems from a Higher Power. This is one of those songs.
HARD TIMES
SOME PEOPLE LIVE THEIR LIVES DOWN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD
THEY AVOID THE ROUGH SPOTS AND THEY DON’T CARRY ANY LOAD
BUT THAT WASN’T MEANT FOR ME AS I STUMBLE DOWN MY TRAIL
I SEEM TO GO FROM HIGH TO LOW, FROM HAPPINESS TO DEEP TRAVAIL
I KNOW IT HAPPENS FOR A REASON ‘CAUSE THERE’S LESSONS I MUST LEARN
SO I’M GIVEN EVERY PLEASURE AS I CLIMB
BUT WHEN I’M HAPPY AND CONTENTED AND THERE’S MONEY TO BURN
I BETTER LOOK OUT ‘CAUSE I’M HEADED FOR HARD TIMES
I HAD A PRETTY WIFE, THAT WAS A DREAM COME TRUE
AND WE LIVED UPON OUR RANCH, AND I’M TELLING YOU
SHE WAS MY LIFE’S INSPIRATION, SHE WAS A BUTTERFLY
SHE WAS MY REASON FOR LIVING, AND THEN SHE DIED
I KNOW IT HAPPENED FOR A REASON ‘CAUSE THERE’S LESSONS I MUST LEARN
SO I’M GIVEN EVERY PLEASURE AS I CLIMB
BUT WHEN I’M HAPPY AND CONTENTED AND THERE’S MONEY TO BURN
I BETTER LOOK OUT ‘CAUSE I’M HEADED FOR HARD TIMES
NOW I LIVE MY LIFE IN SOLITUDE, IN THE CONFINES OF MY MIND
AS I REMEMBER ALL THESE HAPPENINGS AGAIN
NOW I LISTEN AND I STUDY, AS I TRY TO FIND
WAYS TO MAKE THIS WORLD A BETTER PLACE THAN IT’S BEEN
I KNOW THINGS HAPPEN FOR A REASON ‘CAUSE THERE’S LESSONS WE MUST LEARN
SO WE’RE GIVEN EVERY PLEASURE AS WE CLIMB
BUT WHEN WE’RE HAPPY AND CONTENTED AND THERE’S MONEY TO BURN
WE BETTER LOOK OUT ‘CAUSE WE’RE HEADED FOR HARD TIMES
A few years later I picked up the broken pieces and continued on with my life, remarried and had two more beautiful daughters who are both now attending university. One is studying criminology and playing university soccer and is determined to join the RCMP, and recently hired for the summer as a security guard; the other is taking psychology, has danced all her life, and is now teaching dance from beginners to advanced students. Raised side by side, they are as different as night and day but both are a pleasure and a treasure to this old mans mind and heart.
So I understand that when one door closes, another door opens, and life goes on until it doesn’t. Overall it has been a wonderful life full of beauty and tragedy, failure and success, and I have learned to listen to that wee small voice that is always there to guide and give direction. All the best from Silverngold.
