i’ve been living through florida’s hurricanes since 1944. i live in the inside corner of the gulf coast, 40 miles from the beach, on high ground (110′ elevation is high ground for the gulf coast. houston city hall is 47′ – the highest point in town.). i built my house in the old time tested southern way, four feet above the ground on piers.
there are about a month worth of canned goods on hand, then a year or more of beans – rice – pasta – peanut butter – honey and other long storage stuff. if i run out of that, there’s the greenhouse and garden to replenish supplies.
i have two 300 gallon bulk tanks for gasoline, and fifty or sixty gallons of bottled drinking water. then, it’s the 500 gallon rain catchment. a couple of generators, a butane camp stove (only a couple dozen cartridges), a wood burning cookstove, and enough red oak firewood for a couple years. (cooking and heating the house)
it’s not that i’m prepared for irma, it’s just that i live in the country, and there isn’t a grocery store just down the street. over the years, i’ve learned to be prepared. when i built my house, i built a big pantry. does anybody else build pantries anymore?
