yes, it blows up from time to time. about once every million years. it “could” blow this year. – but figure the odds.
yes, when it blows, sometimes it blows up big time, spreading ash and devastation for several hundred miles. the word to watch is the “sometimes.” this hotspot has erupted many hundreds of times. the news and the fear porn likes to focus on the biggest, most scary events. historically, the vast majority of eruptions have been smaller. think mount st. helens. it’s a bitch if you’re ten or fifteen miles downwind, but fifty miles away, you’ll hear about it on the news.
if you like having ulcers, yellowstone’s as good a thing to worry about as anything. if you don’t like ulcers and worry, kick back, have a nice cool adult beverage, and enjoy labor day.
