I always get a little queasy when the Gmen quietly prepare for a ‘drill’ of a disaster. 9-11 was a self-fulfilling prophesy. Collapse of the grid with winter coming on would kill many.
Makes me glad I’m on a volcanic speck in the middle of the biggest ocean. And just a few miles as the powerline flies from a 38MW geothermal power plant on the volcano rift.
But we would have horrendous problems with the Honolulu population if the mainland grid went down. Hawaii is dependent on shipping to sustain that population… two or three cargo ships per week to support a million people on that island. Out here in the boonies of the Big Island we can be self sufficient with a bit of work. Enough to survive. Glad I got out of the big city.
