This is my home away from home :
The tent has an awning ( two actually , on adjacent sides so you can choose which works best for the campsite ) , a snorkel which attaches to the van via magnets and straps , and a fly to help keep things dry inside , and cooler on hot sunny days . The snorkel permits four modes when using the interior of the van to sleep : open with no barrier to the tent , tailgate closed and locked for maximum privacy , a net window to allow flow through from tent to van or a fabric privacy screen if parents are sleeping in the van while kids are sleeping in the tent and need ‘supervision’ .

It takes about 20 minutes to set up , and goes up more easily with two than alone .

The van I have had for eleven years , and except for impact with a bear ( the bear lost that argument ) it has been without problems .

Thanks, that was pretty neat. The guy sort’a  looks like me too, with the light hair and beard. My hair’s not that long though. That photo is probably from the ’70s. Everybody had big hair back then.

I started with a 1965 Chevy cargo van, finished the interior with paneling and carpeting etc set up for camping. It was great for the kids too. We could go out, visit friends, and leave them in the van outside in the driveway.

No need for a baby sitter, had sleeping bags and a little TV in there for them. At the same time I had a new ’69 Camaro, but enjoyed the van more so sold the Camaro.  Also at work, I’d eat lunch ahead of time, then go out to my van set an alarm, and take a nap.

When the weather was nice I’d have the side door open. A couple of my co-workers saw this and they did the same thing. Bought vans, fixed them up inside so they could do it too.

Looks like nice Jeep. Jeep wranglers coming back now in popularity. There good at taking to off-road. Don’t know what they’re made of anymore. A friend has a new one I can check. She loves it took off to wine country last week in in lol Nove in wine tasting all around walking distance from the lodge and camp and nice restaurants so no need to drive. Good thing.

Cars these days are pretty much plastic to make them lighter so not as much rust problems we had to worry about then. Snow areas getting under the car caused problems for people too. That was hard to get psychology used to after growing up with metal cars but I guess were better off. It did hurt metal companies though. If we knew that we could of bought a bunch of different types cheap put a non op on them saved them sold them later as collectibles lol
I wonder if we will have to do that with PMs one day lol

Astros get 20-25? That’s pretty good. Or 25 is but sometimes it’s how you drive. I got more mileage on my Rav because I could coast and pick up momo BEFORE I went up hills not during although maintain speed. I don’t know what people think when they practically break before going up or at least maintain speed.

I remember the Astros were pretty popular but I had the Ford Econo. It had a four butane burner stove and oven, refrigerator, heater table beds so probably why it needed to carry heavier load. I’ve been going back and forth a few years now deciding what I wanted. From a truck that could hold or pull a camper to a sports car like a boxer I almost got. So went in the middle basically with this car cuz it has sports mode really don’t need less traffic calls for it and after paid off in a couple years or less can give away my other one maybe or wait till one of the grandkids can drive. I gave the econo to a place for the blind.
This one has good power can accelerate leave everyone in the dust if I wanted except maybe real fast cars.

Oh I forgot the warrantee also comes with loaner car I forgot about till you just mentioned it. I just HOPE I don’t need it but as years go on probably will. If your daughter gets Geico they have new car insurance and they’re fast about everything. I don’t need it I hope but if I didn’t have bumper to bumper I’d get it because they’re open 24-7 and fast. and would give her a loaner. Best if a warrantee you don’t pay for and if none then she needs to get a pre sales check by a good night tech mechanic. I almost bought a used Convertsble Lexus and insisted I had it checked by my mechanic. Good thing because they check everything. Handed me a long list one for sure was saftey and another told me check engine light had been reset but problem wasn’t resolved. No matter for anyone esp women not a mechanic be 500 or thousands best to get it checked first. If they don’t agree big red flag. Hard to take it back once you sign plus no matter what they say hard to get them to fix anything less you have it in writing. Geico They sent me insurance right away via fax to this place too. They’re really good.

Wax will help and mine is waxed, but unfortunately Pajero’s rust from the inside and after a certain time it wins !!!

astros get 20-25 mpg.  the 10 or so mpg ones you’re thinking about are the big v-8’s.  v-6’s aren’t nearly as thirsty – specially with a slow driving geezer!

Some people drive 30,000 miles a year. Then it makes sense to get more miles per gallon. But 5-10k miles?? How much money can you save? And why are we risking our lives trying to save a few bucks anyway? Because of the Media?

Who needs 28 miles per gallon to the point of impact? Modern cars are going on fire here after accidents. People can’t get out. Distorted sheet metal jamming doors. News black out on this. They don’t want to bad mouth these modern foreign cars that look like appliances. Below a letter I sent to Editorial Dept. at Newsday. Years ago the “greased” the Americans to buy imports by bad mouthing US cars.

I just wanted to bring to Newsday’s attention, my study re car accidents, that may be of value for future Newsday stories that attract readers and change people’s habits.

Briefly, I’m driving since 1962, and reading Newsday every day since 1964. Do you remember the old..

#1 Ford Pinto stories? They blow up in flames if rear ended.
#2 The Chevy pick up truck stories? They blow up in flames if broad sided.
#3 Chevy Corvair stories? “Unsafe at any speed”?

I’m studying very often for years now, car wreck stories and photos in Newsday. They show the modern day, gas saving, environmentally friendly, foreign made imported cars, either up side down, on their sides, sometimes nose or tail up, standing up against a tree, if you’re LUCKY.

Unfortunately, very often, these modern type (after 2000) cars blow up in flames. Also, because of the cheap uni-body sheet metal construction, versus the quality body on frame construction of yesteryear, after a crash, it distorts the body sheet metal, and doors can’t be opened, after a crash, and people are trapped inside and can’t get out.

I assume you also read Newsday every day and are familiar with my observations noted above. I think it would be a good idea to inform the public, like Newdsay often does. Have your investigators look into the makes and models that are most prone to the problems observed. Help people make better choices when they buy a car, and know what makes and models to avoid.

Living by the beach the cards can rust too. Won’t keeping them waxed help prevent that? Now car washes have wax optional. Don’t know how good it is compaired to doing it yourself but who had time for that anymore.
One of my friends offered me her Honda oddesy Van with only 59K miles on it which was tempting but already have to fix the air conditioner. Some places you don’t need it but in Calif you do.

Roger that. Ya know? The gas is cheaper these days at $2.60/gal than is was back in the day for 25 cents. Gasoline today, to match, be equal to .25 cents, should be $3.75 at LEAST using a modest factor of X 15. many things at X 20. I suspect the subsidize gasoline and add the loss to diesel. Diesel is NOT supposed to cost more than refined gasoline. I’m leaving the table now. Nice day here. happy mining. 🙂

One of my best ever buys is a 1994 3.5 V6 Mitsubishi Pajero SWB…cost me £ 1500, with 60 K on the clock and a factory recon engine…now @ 120 K miles…., had it @ 10 years…never let us down…only wear and tear. Rust will unfortunately get it ….eventualy.

Vans are nice to have but in those days gas was cheaper. How many miles per gallon do they get? A lot of these older models including trucks some trucks only get about 10 or so miles a gallon.
They do come in handy to just go to sleep on long road trip and no one knows.
I had a retired cop friend but wanted to date wasn’t interested who let me go on a stake out with him to see how it was and it was like he said boring. He told me one time he was out on one some young guy tried to break in his van. He was met with a gun in his face and he let him walk after giving him the 50 dollars he had in his pocket to fix the vent window he broke.

Ford vans are too big 138″ wheel base. Meant to carry heavy loads, not recommended by me for recreational every day driver.
