Ventura Highway… er.. Railway in the sun. The brightly painted
unit is called a ‘Cabbage’ car… a cab and baggage car. It is
an old locomotive with the engines stripped out to be used as
a control cab for the train, with power supplied by the loco at
the tail end in ‘pusher’ mode. With the engines gone, they
used the interior space for baggage for the train. With a control
cab at each end of the train like this they can be used for commuter
service in both directions with no turnarounds.
