The public showers were free .That was a different era ,people looked out for the publics welfare ,it was WW2 era,a very tough era  almost every house had a member in the war.we took care of each other .I ran errands for neighbors ,grocery store, butcher shop ,chickens were live purchased and processed while you wait ..ten minutes from the pen to your shopping bag ..couldn’t be done today fresh .There were no Supermarkets,no frozen foods ….a few A&P stores very small about the size of a 7-11 or smaller..They sold can goods ,cold cuts, cereal, and pickles  and sauerkraut from a barrel ..

I always made money ,ran errands for tips ,usually a dime .On Saturdays I collected deposit soda bottle .05,collected newspapers and assorted metals for war use .Copper was .14 per pound, newspapers .01 per pound rags..old steel hot water tanks for .25 .The butcher shop bought back used bacon grease or frying oil for war use ,we filtered it through a rag first.Money was not a problem, there was nothing to spend it on..No consumer goods.Shoes were hard to get all war time items .You needed ration stamps to buy sugar, coffee ,gasoline .Even if you wanted to pay more they couldent sell it to you ,but you could bye a neighbors stamps if they were willing to sell or trade.

Grandpa would come for dinner Sunday afternoon.Mom would give me a quarter to go to the bar and buy a kettle of beer from the TAP for him …They always sold it to me no questions just said “go straight home”with it .  haha  those were the days..

What Kind of Hyper-Enthusiastic Market is this that Blindly Keeps Pursuing Scams to Make a Fortune Overnight, even if They Already Crashed the First Time?

That’s interesting, public showers. With all the homelessness is places maybe there is a new market for them if the price was low enough like 50 cents on a timed like 5 minute shower.People pay gyms for that and it’s 20 a month and they get much more than a shower. Even better a commune hotel with cubicles and gender segregated with a bed or two beds for children and cribs if needed with with timed shower included for the working homeless. They can renovate some of these older homes that are just sitting around. These homeless cities should have more public bathrooms put up too.

When I was a kid we used to visit my Dad’s family who lived on Ave J in Brooklyn.

It’s such a good idea I’m flabbergasted we haven’t done it before! You’re right it beats the hell out of having them in Syria.

Gee, Rick…what a daring call-!!

Rick Rule, CEO of Sprott U.S. Holdings, and a commodity veteran who has been in the market for over 40 years, thinks a trade war could finally push gold over the $1,400/oz. level, Bloomberg reported this morning.

I don’t mess around…

the great Brooklyn trolley system lasted into the 50s–as did the one in the bronx–love the bath house vignette–reminds me that still in the 30s, in cities-there were people using “ice boxes”–not many-that you saw Burt Lahr & Gypsy is amazing–I didn’t know that limited Burlesque held on that long.

The potential to panic is great-!

How Panic Buying Turned To Panic Selling

In the latest indication of just how influential a handful of megacap tech stocks have become, Bloomberg pointed out Tuesday that an index of the most actively traded US stocks (a group that of course includes many of the FANG + Apple stocks that are beloved by both hedge funds and retail investors) has recently endured its worst run of losses in more than a year.
After underperforming the S&P 500 again last year (despite notching their best returns in years), hedge funds engaged in panic buying of the market leaders, which at the time seemed like they could only go higher for fear that their limited partners might opt to pull if they didn’t toe the Wall Street consensus. Goldman showed this in this recent table of the Top 50 most widely held hedge fund stocks, of which the bulk were tech names
Now, that panic buying has shifted to panic selling.
According to Bloomberg, this suggests that the “fast momentum money”  – i.e., CTAs, risk parity and hedge funds – helped drive tech shares to their largest monthly drop since April 2016 last month. Tech stocks dropped another 2.5% on Monday before rebounding to lead stocks higher late Tuesday morning.

Typically, the most heavily traded stocks aren’t the best performers and vice versa. However, during the first three months of the year, hedge funds and CTAs helped flip this trend on its head.
Now, Bloomberg is left wondering: Will smart money selling continue to drive tech stocks – and by extension the broader market – lower?
Traders created an environment where the most heavily traded shares were also the best performers. Market leaders can carry the market higher without any frenzied buying or selling. During the first three months of the year however, speculative buyers created a strange market quirk, in which the highest turnover shares were also the best-performing ones.
The fact that this relationship has now reverted to normal may be a sign that a phenomenon some warned of earlier in the year is coming to pass.
“The issue with speculator money is they can come in and drive prices up and once they see signs of something happening, they quickly leave and drag prices down,” Vitali Kalesnik, head of equity research at Research Affiliates LLC, told Bloomberg News in January.

If we’re going to deploy our troops we might as well deploy them along the southern border and get them the hell out of every other country in the world – start with Syria.

I grew up in Elizabeth ,NJ just about the time they were phasing out the trollys  in Brooklyn NY and paving over the Tracks .WE had relatives in Brooklyn .I dont recall any in Elizabeth ,but I do remember public baths located on Elizabeth Ave below ground ..down a flight of steps in a large room with public showers .Some houses were so old were without bath tubs so public showers werent uncommon .One side of the street had for males ,the other females and you brought your own soap and towel in a little carry bag..I do remember .05 cent bus fares and they were closing the old Burlesque theatres in Newark NJ. Minskys and Empire Burlesque I manages to see one or two with Burt Lahr and Gypsy Rose Lee as a teen just before they closed ..There was no nudity contrary to imaginations of todays standards.haha…

not a high confidence trade but stocks looking iffy…[yeah, I guess I trade more when I’m using the houses’ money]

US military buildup in Manbij amid Turkey’s offensive signal

The U.S. has strengthened its military presence in Syria’s Manbij, where Turkey says it will conduct an operation to eliminate YPG terrorists, leading to fears of a possible clash between the two NATO allies

The U.S. is intensifying its military presence in northern Syria’s Manbij district, controlled by the PKK’s Syrian affiliate, where Ankara said it will launch an offensive to eliminate terrorists posing a threat to Turkey, if they continue to stay in the region. Approximately 300 U.S. soldiers arrived in Manbij, west of the Euphrates River, in a convoy which included many armored vehicles and construction machines, Anadolu Agency (AA) reported, citing local sources. As Operation Olive Branch in Syrian northwestern Afrin, launched on Jan. 20, is coming to a completion, Turkey has vowed to take unilateral action against the terrorist PKK-linked People’s Protection Units (YPG) if they continue to remain in Manbij and the eastern parts of the Euphrates River.
