Commish might know Mick Kalber. Back in the early 1980’s Mick was an independent videographer in Kona, with his own professional camera and tape editor. I worked at the NBC affiliate in Honolulu, and we would sometimes hire Mick as a contract ‘stringer’ to shoot news video for us on the Big Island. When the volcano erupted in 1983, Mick began taking helicopter flights with his camera and documenting the volcano flows. It became a lifelong passion and business for him. “Tropical Visions” now sells the majority of volcano videos on the market to the visitor industry. Mick is still taking almost daily flights with Paradise Helicopters to video the lava flows, and is posting raw lava videos on his website.
