FBI Executive Assistant Director Carl Ghattas has called it quits.

Ghattas, who heads the Bureau’s National Security Branch, is also described as the most experienced counterterrorism agent on the FBI’s rolls. He “leads the FBI’s operations and intelligence efforts involving all national security matters, ranging from terrorism to espionage to weapons of mass destruction,” according to the FBI.

Ghattas decided to retire Thursday, the fourth top FBI agent to walk away in the last week. But Ghattas’ departure is certainly the biggest. By far.

Ghtattas, a shrewd operator inside the FBI who managed to keep his name away from negative news stories, is best friends with fired FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe. Both reportedly attended Duke University during undergrad and went on to  law school. McCabe and Ghattas reportedly roomed together at Duke, where McCabe also met his wife, Dr. Jill McCabe.

McCabe often sported a flashy Porsche, zipping in and out of the FBI parking garage under headquarters off Pennsylvania Ave in D.C. Then Ghattas also did the same, purchasing his own Porsche reportedly and driving it to work. Many agents fumed at the optics of the FBI’s top brass cruising around the beltway in Porches, but that didn’t seem to stop the duo and then-Director James Comey was oblivious to the optics — a pattern all now see during Comey’s tenure.

McCabe often described Ghattas as his personal legal advisor and wherever McCabe was and was doing, you could expect Ghattas wasn’t far behind, several FBI sources said.

“Ghattas was McCabe’s wing man,” one FBI agent said. “He was a better operator than McCabe but you did not want to cross either one of them because there was a mean streak there for sure and it just wan’t worth it on any level.”

But without McCabe’s protection, lost when he was fired, Ghattas wasn’t the same politically powerful agent, sources said. Couple that with emerging news that the House Intelligence Committee investigators said Ghattas’ name has surfaced in a matter they are investigating, and “the writing was one the wall for Ghattas” to exit the FBI as one agent put it.

Before McCabe’s firing, Ghattas was jockeying to become the FBI’s SES liaison with the Central Intelligence Agency, National Security Agency and White House but never did get the post, which would have been considered a large step down for Ghattas. FBI sources said.

Introduction: For a number of years Admiral Thomas Moorer, former Chief of Naval Operations and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff was my colleague at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Tom, after whom the F-14 Tomcat fighter is named, expressed to me his concern that US politics and foreign policy was in the clutches of Israel and that America was being led into war with the Arab Middle East. Admiral Moorer and the State Department and Pentagon at that time did not think that war with the Arab countries served the interests of the United States. However, Admiral Moorer thought that the war could not be avoided because of the hold Israel has over the US government.

What convinced him of this was Washington’s coverup of the 1967 Israeli attack on the USS Liberty which resulted in 208 killed and wounded Americans. Tom was disheartened that Admiral John S. McCain Jr., the father of the current US senator, for career reasons had cooperated with the coverup. Tom worried that careerism had destroyed the integrity of the US military.

Gold tops Sep 6 a seven year ganniversary from Sep 6 2011 high. Should reach higher, and will drop with stock market for the same length of time.

A couple of weeks from now are these tops.

Rather than an epi-center of large wave up, it is a final parabolic blow off. S&P made new all time high today which is a pretty good signal for an up move. A one day correction usually follows such a signal.

A crash ahead of the US elections – major crash, then things really blow up (dollar). Hence the mention of all saints day earlier.

yes, that part of utah is dry enough to dry out any amount of hurricane induced sogginess.  i passed through a little west of there (price-green river-hanksville) last summer.  too dry even for sagebrush.  if you are still feeling soaked by next may, there’s a gang of lunatic geezers planning a couple weeks rambling around  a little south of there in an area i think of as “wyle e. coyote country.”  always room around the campfire for another lunatic.

Well, the predictive wizards at NWS got it right, but it was a nail biter right to the end.   Honolulu and Maui did indeed escape the bullet.  I cannot say the same for my big island of East Hawaii.  It’s weird because we were the area farthest from the storm.  But it keeps sucking up moisture from the southeast and hitting our mountains.

I had 15 inches of rain again in the past 24 hours.  East Hawaii had more rain than the rest of the islands combined, and IT IS STILL RAINING with Flood Warnings posted in my area still…. Warnings, not ‘watch’!  Hilo area has exceeded 40 inches.  Low areas near the river are still deeply ponded.

Where the heck is Noah?  We need him.
