Finally a beautiful sunny day with minimal clouds, and most of the roads fixed up, I decided to take a shopping trip to our warehouse outlet store. It’s in Kona, on the other side of the BIG island, and the trip is 100 miles each way over ‘the saddle’… the pass between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, our two big mountains. So I don’t do it very often.
Today it hit home when I stopped at the park at the top and read the GPS to find my elevation was 6800 ft above sea level…. that I left an hour before. Egads! That’s higher than ‘mile high’ Denver!
Coming home with a car heavy with cases of beverage and food and household supplies is real fun when you start climbing the 8% grade. You find out just how good your car power and mechanics are. The ominous sign says ‘No Services-50 miles’.
