In 1967 the average rent was 125 a month.
I remember my mom saying you shouldn’t spend more than a weeks pay for housing and starting out at minimum wage I’m thinking yeas if you want to live in the ghetto.
At 1.40 a hour that’s only at 40 hours
A week 56 dollars before taxes.
That means in 1967 you’d still not making enough for that 125 a month average apt. It’s costs are more that two weeks pay minus work expenses and taxes.
So housing costs have always been a issue in our working years for minimum wage but just getting worse to the point of unaffordable I’m some areas.
Given there are other issues too like gas which has a effect on other consumer costs but can be controlled to a point anyways where housing cost can’t be cut down on. Sometime that control can be dangerous. My youngest daughter bought a motorcycle for instance as fun but cheaper on gas. While pregnant with her while driving a bike a guy turning was looking the other way turning ran right into me. I quickly stood up on the bike and jumped on impact putting me on the hood of his truck escaped with bruises but the bike got crunched. Her dad riding s bigger one a Harley got hit wound up breaking all the bones in his legs and feet. So I worry. Same with those forced to live in higher crime areas.
