Kicking Horse Pass is in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, on the border of Alberta and British Columbia. Spectacular mountains… although I’ve never been there.
But the San Juans and Ouray… yep! This is the view from the summit of Mt. Sneffels looking south into Yankee Boy basin and out across the San Juans. 14,156ft. Conquered in Aug. 1978 by me.
Take the Camp Bird Mine road out of Ouray up into the Yankee Boy basin below the mountain. Base camped at 10,000ft near the end of the valley at the base of the mountain. Even ‘acclimated’ for a week in high elevations, it was a chore to climb loose boulder talus for several thousand feet up, hoping no one above you knocked loose a rockslide.
