I read that ‘Northbound’ and was confused momentarily also. Then I realized that the “California Coasters” run in Push-Pull mode without turning around for the return trips. You are seeing a locomotive on the south end of the train… pushing the train northbound ahead of it. Mystery solved.
These trains have a control-cab in the end car that has remote locomotive controls, so the engineer sits in there with a forward view of the tracks ahead as he controls the pusher locomotive in the rear.
