Maya – that photo brings back a lot of memories
Water tanks at stations and whistle stops to take on coal and water on transcontinental passenger trains . Words that now are virtually meaningless such as ‘stoker’ . I suppose ‘the tender’ now evokes thoughts of diesel fuel instead of coal and water . I’m happy to have vivid memories of the days of steam travel . By the time I was five , I had seen both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of Canada thanks to steam locomotives . I also remember feeling some trepidation as that behemoth transcontinental locomotive pulled past the platform , with its drive wheels taller than my dad . Huge , compared to the smaller regional locomotives I had been used to seeing .
Thanks for bringing back those memories ! Even memories of accompanying my mother grocery shopping at ‘the A&P’ (the Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company – once the biggest grocery chain in Canada).
Gold Train
