I will never forget traveling in France by car with my late wife on scenic rural roads , and forgetting that the French restaurants have rather strict hours of operation . We had visited a chateau/vineyard in Burgundy after a meager ‘breakfast’ of croissant and coffee . I had known the owners , so the tour of the thousand year old chateau dragged on until well past noon . We got back on the road , and by that time my wife was ravenously hungry , and letting me know it . Finally , I spotted an inn with a nice terrace restaurant … Perfect ! I pulled off the road , and we sat down . A few minutes later a waiter emerged to tell us that we were too late for lunch . I’d forgotten that after 2 pm , there was no lunch service anywhere . I should have known better !
It was a frosty afternoon in the car as we continued our travels with empty stomachs !
