did, I would take 2 tablets [400mcg] a day for 3 or 4 days then one a day until illness was over–otherwise one every other day is recommended–I don’t take selenium tablets cause my diet is so rich in selenium–especially the whole grains and my daily dose of shitake mushrooms.

What Dosages cause Selenium Overdose?

While there is no clear cut answer to this because of varying levels of selenium in water and soil in each part of the world, one study reported early signs of selenium toxicity at dosages as low as 400 mcg per day. And the benefits of selenium supplementation don’t seem to require dosages that high, so it’s safe to say that it is unnecessary and potentially unsafe to take dosages of 400 mcg per day or more long term.

In the short term, there have been many studies showing benefits of taking 200 mcg per day for many months at a time without causing selenium toxicity. But there is no consensus as to how long this dosage can be continued safely. And again, the safety of these dosages will depend upon the levels of selenium that occur naturally in your food and water as well. So a dosage that is safe for one person may not be safe for another person who lives in an area with high selenium levels or eats the plants grown in an area with high selenium levels.

So, from a selenium safety perspective we can say that you should NOT take selenium at dosages of 400 mcg or higher unless a doctor specifically tells you that you should, otherwise you are putting yourself at risk for

Selenium Overdose, and there is just simply no reason to put yourself at risk when much lower Dosages of Selenium can provide potential health benefits with minimal risk.

In fact, 400 mcg per day is also the usually EXTREMELY conservative “safe upper limit” selenium dosage that is set by the Institute of Medicine. So, these guidelines are very conservative. So, play it safe, know all of the

Facts about Selenium and don’t overdo it.

Two More Virus Cases in Hawaii

Posted by Maya @ 21:47 on March 14, 2020

Now total is 4.  Visiting couple flew in to Kauai on Hawaiian Airlines days ago, came down sick, tested positive and are now in isolation on Kauai island.   Airline and health department furiously tracking movements and other passengers.  Still no visible ‘community spread’ here.   Hawaiian Airlines notes passenger loads down.  Without saying which routes, they say they have downsized 10%… so far.

And still the cruise ships come a-docking in Hawaii, circulating tourists among us.  State pleas to Federal DOT to ban cruise ships is so far not happening.   Will it will take a proven ‘spreader’ case from a cruise ship here before they act?  Damn federal bureaucracy… reactive rather than proactive.

Selenium for Immune System Support

It’s thought that selenium may exert its anti-cancer effects not only due to its antioxidant properties but also because of its ability to boost immune system function. Selenium may stimulate the immune system so it’s able to eliminate early cancers, for instance.

Further, a study in the North American Journal of Medical Sciences found the combination of selenium and beta-glucans (long-chain polysaccharides found in mushrooms) is particularly beneficial. The researchers concluded:10

Using two different murine models of cancer, we showed that the Se/glucan combination strongly suppressed the growth of cancer, mostly probably via stimulation of immunity.A combination of glucan with Se offers superior stimulation of immunity and inhibition of cancer growth.”

Aside from cancer, this immune stimulation may be beneficial for prevention of infectious diseases. Selenium is often mentioned in concert with HIV, as HIV-infected individuals often have low selenium levels.

Some studies have also found an association between selenium deficiency and progression to AIDS, while others have found selenium supplementation may reduce hospitalizations and improve white blood cell counts among this population.11

Selenium May Fight Viral and Bacterial Infections

It may also be useful for other viral infections, including influenza, as well as potentially bacterial infections. Researchers wrote in Advances in Nutrition:12

Viral and bacterial infections are often associated with deficiencies in macronutrients and micronutrients, including the essential trace element selenium. In selenium deficiency, benign strains of Coxsackie and influenza viruses can mutate to highly pathogenic strains.

Dietary supplementation to provide adequate or supranutritional selenium supply has been proposed to confer health benefits for patients suffering from some viral diseases, most notably with respect to HIV and influenza A virus (IAV) infections.

In addition, selenium-containing multimicronutrient supplements improved several clinical and lifestyle variables in patients coinfected with HIV and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Selenium status may affect the function of cells of both adaptive and innate immunity.”

One way selenium influences immune response is via selenoproteins (selenium-containing proteins). Individual selenoproteins are known to regulate inflammation and immunity, while it’s known that adequate levels of selenium are necessary to initiate immunity and also for regulating excessive immune responses and chronic inflammation.13

Your body has only a small requirement for selenium. The minimum daily recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for this mineral is 55 micrograms (mcg) for adults, and this is one nutrient where you don’t want too much.

While small amounts provide important benefits, taking too much (for instance, 400 mcg daily) has potentially been linked to an increased risk of diabetes.2 That being said, unless you’re taking a supplement, it’s difficult to “overdose” on selenium that’s naturally occurring in foods.

As mentioned, many people struggle to get enough. This is particularly true if you eat a primarily processed-food diet, as selenium is destroyed by refining and processing.3 Why is it so important to be sure your body has optimal selenium levels?

It acts as a powerful antioxidant (and its antioxidant effects increase when combined with vitamin E4).

Another Million Silver Eagles Past Two Days

With the spread of the Global Contagion, the demand for physical precious metals has increased significantly…

by Steve St Angelo of SRSrocco Report

With the spread of the Global Contagion, the demand for physical precious metals has increased significantly.  According to the U.S. Mint’s newest update, another million Silver Eagles were sold over the past two days.  This brings to total Silver Eagle sales in March at 2.3 million, more than three times the previous month.

On my last update, the U.S. Mint sold a total of 1,345,000 Silver Eagles as of March 9th. Over the next two days, another 975,000 Silver Eagles were sold for a total of 2,320,000.

We haven’t seen this type of buying for quite some time.  The U.S. Mint doesn’t sell Silver Eagles directly to the public, but rather to Authorized Purchasers who sell to the public.  So, these sales figures represent purchases by the Authorized Dealers.  Regardless, if the Authorized Dealers are buying a great deal more Silver Eagles in March, they are doing so because they are experiencing much higher demand from the public.

However, there may be a problem shortly for the Authorized Dealers if the U.S. Mint runs out of stocks of Silver Eagles.  Why?  Because, the U.S. Mint has cut back on monthly production runs of Silver Eagles due to the decreased demand for the past few years.  I doubt the U.S. Mint will be able to supply another 1-2 million Silver Eagles in a short period of time.  Thus, we may see the U.S. Mint suspend sales of Silver Eagles shortly until they can increase stocks.

If you do not own any physical precious metals, it may be a good idea to start DIVERSIFYING some assets into Gold and Silver.  With the continued spread of the Global Contagion and coming disruptions in the Just-In-Time Inventory Supply Chain, it’s highly likely that demand for precious metals will only increase going forward. With rising demand and constrained supply, we may start to see much higher prices for gold and silver.

There’s something called universal precautions health care practices on a daily basis. It has to be drilled into him as you say because they don’t know what they’re walking into or working with. It’s just not the virus although air born, could be anything.
When I walked in and did wound assessments as well as head to toe for new admits I didn’t have access to their charts many times yet or things could be missing initially. They could have Hep B Hep C HIV TB who knows and sometimes they did. So it becomes a life style so to speak.
As far as visiting you just be supportive to your new doctor in the family, even though you ain’t scared.

Goldie – thanks for responding. I guess I’m just not worried. Not about myself but especially not about my son. As a Med Student, they are pounding in to his head all the potential pitfalls and in particular, all the preventative measures, i.e. hand washing, etc. He’s worried about seeing me, and that sucks because truthfully, I ain’t scared!

treefrog – yeah, my timing is always suspect so next week might be a bit optimistic. I have no doubt though that the Fed will cut rates to zero most likely next week, and if they don’t the SM will tank. The Gov’t. will spend like crazy.

I’m semiretired but wonder if worse visiting nurses home care now. As far as I know there’s at least 17 known cases around here. Likely due to travel and community spread.
A retired Chaplin who lives in Washington state now sort of in law has a friend from church I’m guessing who’s wife being transferred in bad shape from the sound of it probably has ARDS symptoms “ adult respiratory distress syndrome” very serious who has been diagnosed with it. I’m not sure if this person is from Washington, he put out a prayer request and she doesn’t look like a senior and looks like she has a young daughter.
Just take precautions now and understand where your son is coming from and remind him to take precautions himself and gets enough rest as it helps the immune system too. Hopefully it won’t be bad where he is.
It’s really up to the people now not to spread this. How confident are you with that? I’m not. The other day I saw a used mask in a food cart at the store someone just threw there.
The young still going out congregating and hope they don’t get it.

Goldie – you’re a nurse right?

Posted by Buygold @ 17:20 on March 14, 2020

How many patients have you seen that have the virus?

My son has been doing family medicine for 4 weeks. Not a single patient has the virus, although I guess the testing is more available now. He thinks he’s been exposed and not sick, but doesn’t want to see us. Healthy 26 y/o kid – should not be worried.

I’m a healthy old cruster and think gold is much more likely to kill me than the virus.

That’s an easy 4 Bagger by next Friday

I no longer have the guts or money for the 3 x’s plays.

I still stand by my call though, gold is going ballistic at some point next week, hopefully silver too. The USD should get smashed and the bond market rally like crazy – unless it’s broken as Maddog suggests.

The virus news is getting worse as we all knew it would. Panic among the public is just starting to set in. They are going to start restricting domestic travel which will wipe out the airlines and hotels.

This shit was all planned. Drink beer, smoke cigars, eat junk food while it’s still available, and you’ll be fine. 🙂

Hope they make a special plan for those who are now getting reduced hours.

Posted by goldielocks @ 16:18 on March 14, 2020

There is something else unemployment needs to address. Those getting their hours reduced. Heard from someone her son was put on 4 days a week but needs 5 to pay his bills. Hope unemployment is able to supplement reduced hours, not just plain laid off.

It was speculated that miso and other sea weed foods helped protect the thyroid of people after the atomic bomb. But not everyone can have iodine either allergic or hyper-thyroid issues and should have a warning on it. Besides fermented tofu seaweed and vegetables it has potassium which may be a reason it helps flush out the sodium.

All the large cap shares that traded AH were also up. Even NUGT which closed @ $6.76 was bid $8.01, ask $9.49. Even the worst pig of all JNUG closed @ $4.47 and bid $5.90 by $6.92

So, I guess if our local trader R640 or anyone else out there picked off the bottom in NUGT. They could make some serious bank.

What’s New and Beneficial About Miso

Posted by Richard640 @ 11:09 on March 14, 2020

  • Miso is typically considered to be a high-sodium food, since one teaspoon of miso often contains 200-300 milligrams of sodium. However, recent research has shown that in spite of its high-sodium content, miso does not appear to affect our cardiovascular system in the way that other high-sodium foods sometimes can. In recent animal studies, for example, identical concentrations of salt (sodium chloride) obtained from miso versus table salt were discovered to have very different impacts on blood pressure. High-salt diets that derived their high salt level from table salt raised blood pressure in these animal studies, but high-salt diets that derived their high salt from miso did not. Recent human studies on miso intake among Japanese adults have also shown that miso-containing diets tend to lower risk of cardiovascular problems, despite the high-salt content of miso. Reasons for this unique relationship between miso and our cardiovascular system are not yet clear. However, some researchers have speculated that the unique soy protein composition of miso (including peptide building-blocks of protein that get formed from soy proteins when the beans are fermented) is one of the key reasons for the cardiovascular support provided by miso. Since miso is seldom eaten alone, other cardio-supportive foods in miso soups and miso stir-fries might also play an important role in these research findings.
  •
  • Some of the health benefits provided by soy foods depend on the ability of bacteria or other micro-organisms to break down two of the soy’s isoflavones – daidzein and genistein—into related compounds (for example, equol). Interestingly, recent research has shown that many different strains of the fungus Aspergillus oryzae—by far the most widely-used fungus in the fermentation of miso—are capable of breaking down both daidzein and genistein. This finding is great news for anyone who already enjoys miso, or is considering adding miso to their diet. If micro-organisms used in miso fermentation don’t break down some of the daidzein and genistein into other compounds like equol, it’s up to the micro-organisms in our digestive tract to do so. While it is fantastic when we have the right balance of micro-organisms in our digestive tract to help us get optimal nourishment and health benefits from our food, those conditions don’t always hold true. So it can be very helpful when a miso-fermenting fungus like Aspergillus oryzae helps breaks down the daidzein and genistein before the miso ever reaches our digestive tract!
  •
  • The list of research-documented antioxidants in miso is growing! In addition to conventional antioxidants like the minerals zinc and manganese, miso is now known to contain phytonutrient antioxidants including phenolic acids like ferulic, coumaric, syringic, vanillic, and kojic acid. Particularly interesting are new additions to the list of miso antioxidants that are related to its fermentation. In several recent studies, the amount of some specific antioxidants in miso appears to increase when fermentation is carried out for a longer period of time. DDPH (2,2,-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) antioxidants appear to be one category of miso antioxidants that increases with prolonged fermentation. These particular free radical scavengers may be more plentiful in miso that has been fermented for many months—or even several years—in comparison to miso that has only been fermented for one to three months. While the jury is still out on the overall antioxidant benefits of miso pastes with varying lengths of fermentation time, the jury is not out on the impressive antioxidant benefits that are provided by this widely enjoyed food.

Nutritional highlights

  • Miso is a source of copper, manganese, vitamin K, protein, and zinc.
  • The fermentation process means that miso is rich in enzymes. Fermentation enhances the number of beneficial bacteria in the food. These bacteria are known as probiotics and are thought to help a wide range of health issues, especially for digestion, absorption and assimilation of nutrients.
  • By consuming fermented foods you are adding beneficial bacteria (known as probiotics) and enzymes to your overall intestinal flora, increasing the health of your gut microbiome and digestive system and enhancing the immune system.
  • Studies in 1997 and 2013 have shown that beneficial bacteria synthesise vitamins in the gut, primarily vitamin K and vitamin B12, as a by-product of their metabolism.
  • There is much research on the benefits of including soy products in the diet. Although miso is made from soy beans, the quantity consumed is quite small and unlikely to have a profound oestrogenic effect.
  • Soy products are widely produced from genetically modified (GM) soybeans. To make sure miso is made from organically grown, not genetically modified soy beans, make sure to read the label. The label will also indicate if the miso is gluten free.
