They were built for Russia but denied export when relations
with Joe Stalin went bad. As a result, these motors were
nicknamed “Little Joe”. Overhead catenary electric, it had
a substation-sized transformer inside to run the eight electric-motor axles. South Shore RR seen here got a couple of these, and some went to the Milwaukee Road where they were used to pull trains over the mountains out west.
