Twenty years ago, two brothers, factory owners that built high quality flexo-graph printing presses. I freelanced for them making all the sheet steel parts, guards, brackets enclosures’ etc. Gears chains wires belts all over them.
They told me in 1999 middle class was now $175,000/yr. I was surprised, but it made sense. Around here there are numerous tax absorber jobs paying $175k and up. We have senior cops making much more than that. And muster out pay often over $400k.
So, the problem in San Francisco is NOT really the high salaries for tax absorbers. That’s middle class money. Needed to get married have kids, wife home etc. The REAL problem is the LOW income salaries of non union tax PAYERS.
Some day Trump and them will figure this out. The US Gov’t should act as a labor Union that represents, and negotiates for NON union employees. For the gov’t own good. For tax income. These riots you can be sure is low income related. There were no riots like that when non union private sector starter wages were very high. Teen agers bought brand new cars with 3 year loans.
Minimum wage today to equal the good old days should be $40/hr. $1,600/week, or $83,000 annual, maybe take home $58,000? for 52 weeks? $1,115/week means you can afford $1,115 per month for rent. One weeks pay should cover the rent.
We have typical 1 bed apartments $2300/month. That means $2300 per week. That’s $119,600 annual. Middle class is the whole 3 bed house. $3500/mo? That’s $3500/week, that’s $182,000 needed here for middle class. San Fran probably has higher living costs than here.
