as commish mentioned a little while ago, algore was “projected president elect” for thirty six days in 2000.
it’s worth noting that none of those thirty six days was inauguration day, and that his streak was ended by the supreme court.
a little more history. set the waaay back machine for 1991, and the confirmation hearings for bush senior’s supreme court appointee, clarence thomas as the first black scotus justice. thomas was hauled over the coals in the senate judiciary committee with (among other b.s.) allegations that he had sexually harassed one anita hill, some years earlier. there was an almost total lack of evidence to back up the allegations, and justice thomas was confirmed. (a precursor to bret kavanaugh’s confirmation??) the point man of the smear on judge thomas’ reputation? the democratic senator from delaware was the leader of what became known as a “high tech lynching.” he used every sleazy, shady inuendo he, or his script writers could come up with to ruin thomas’ life work and reputation. fortunately, his efforts failed.
fast forward to 2020, justice clarence thomas is the de facto leader of the conservative majority on the supreme court. the delaware senator’s name? joe biden. i think justice thomas has – at the very least – an adequately functional memory.
ain’t karma a bitch?
