oil is here to stay – at least for the next few decades.
solar can provide megawatts. if even half of the petroleum powered vehicles in this country were eliminated and replaced by electric, we would need gigawats. many gigawatts. (also, solar doesn’t work worth diddly squat at night.)
if we were to convert to electric, we would need to triple (at least) our electric generating infrastructure. without petroleum (including natural gas) fueled powerhouses, who ya gonna call?
hydro? most of the suitable rivers are already being used. build some new rivers???
wind? stripped of the subsidies, windmills generate enough saleable power to pay for themselves in ten years. they wear out in eight.
nukes? do-able, but it takes years to get a permit and more years to build a nuke powerhouse. there are none in the application pipeline. political kryptonite.
the oil industry will be alive and doing well long after you and i are history.
