Besides the interesting info about cash, I myself have no sympathy for retail. Decades ago I posted that every mall and store should have a brass plate sign at entrances:
“FOREIGN GOODS DISTRIBUTORSHIP”
Only because we import far more than export since 1971. To me they are like traitors or junkies peddling the foreign made stuff to their innocent neighbors. People should be reminded as they walk in. But it’s too late now. The retail industry literally ruined themselves long term when they started in 1970 using foreign labor instead of local labor. Profits were great, the retail grew as the customers lost jobs and income. The trend ran its course. Retail will grow again if they start using domestic labor. The USA would be booming if we had to make our own consumer products.
Just like Henry Ford did. Hired Americans and paid them double so they could afford to buy his retail cars. It’s really time to be happy watching the old world order getting having trouble and failing.
