Back in the 1950’s ,after Chang Kai Shek was driven from the mainland ,I was in the 5th grade when a chinese kid was welcomed to the US ,and he became a close friend of mine .I even invited him to lunch with me with my Mothers ok..We were in fifth grade ..I went to his uncles business to visit him and discovered he had no parents in the US ,but his Uncle took him in and provided a place for him to sleep and eat in the Chinese Laundry he ran.
We became close friends ,we played soft ball together,he was a good player ! After school he helped his Uncle by ironing shirts while doing his homework ..We spent many days together at the Laundry talking as friends in the Laundry and eating Lunch together.. I was very fond of him .We lost contact before high school and one day another friend brought up his name in a conversation.I asked how he was and where was he..This mutual friend said he ran into him at a wedding. He then told me a very disturbing thing about ENG was going to NY every week to be with some communist friends ..WE were all disappointed in him after the US had given him shelter and a welcome when he needed it. All our other friends shunned him and didnt want anything to do with him anymore. I was sad to hear that and never tried to locate him or inquire about his well being after I heard that .!
There were two other Chinese kids welcomed here during that time when Chaing was ousted from the mainland ..I dont know what happened to them, but I never heard any bad things about them .ENG really hurt my friendship we shared together .I felt betrayed even at age 14..!
