I was in a nuclear plant in Asia in the aftermath of a steam turbine failure . The attached generator was cooled with hydrogen – which is okay if there is no air (oxygen) inleakage . That was not the case after the turbine came apart and the huge shaft connecting the turbine to the generator failed . The turbine hall floor was steel plate almost two inches thick , but the fire was so intense that the steel floor buckled like boiled lasagne .
