i suspect the difference is related to population density – both in points of origin, and present situation. upstate new yorkers are a different breed and mindset from manhatten dwellers. the tone of civil behavior in california changes when you get about fifty miles from salt water. downstate illinois is a different world from chicago. i live in a village in a county without a stoplight. half an hour’s drive takes me to a mid-sized city with all the crowding, traffic, and chickenshit regulations.
it’s nice having a city within reach for all the things a city provides – shopping, libraries, an airport, hospitals …etc. but live there? no thanks.
