In 1959 I started college in a conservative western state bordering Nevada . I needed a new pair of Levi’s and my new roommate , who knew the town offered to drive me to Penny’s . We did so , I found my size , and handed the salesgirl a $10 bill . The Levi’s were $3 . The salesgirl mumbled something like ” Paypah? Sivah? . I looked at Fred in puzzlement and he said ” She is asking if you want your change in paper bills or seven silver dollars . Take the paper dollars ” those silver dollars have rough edges and are heavy , so will wear holes in the cotton pockets of your jeans.”
Three silver dollars ( and maybe only two ) will still buy a pair of Levi’s .

P.S. in those days a dollar bill was a silver certificate , not a FRN .
