Dear God! I have chills yet after looking at that. In past decades I have flown many MD500 helicopters to the mountaintops in Hawaii to do broadcast transmitter maintenance. The MD500 has short blades that are jet powered at high speed rotation. It is very powerful and will lift a ton… literally 2,000 lbs. Pilots describe it as the ‘Ferrari’ of helicopters as it is very maneuverable. But with those short blades it does not have a lot of ‘lift’ if the engine fails. One has to literally dive steeply toward your landing site to build up enough rotor speed to pull level out of the dive as you reach the ground. Lucky there was a small beach there, and the pilot did an extraordinary job! I’m still shuddering…
