Guys/Gals
Wish you all well in 2025. As an immigrant from the UK and now a proud Canadian I find it difficult to deal with the rhetoric exuding from Trump. As much as my conservative values force me to agree with much that Trump is doing, his verbiage on many of his allies is odious at best. I am reminded of the time I picked up a hitchhiker in Europe with a Canadian flag on his rucksack. I asked him where in Canada he was from. He replied that he was American but nobody picked up hitchhikers with a US flag on it. I would venture to expect the (ugly) American traveler will be even less accepted in many countries as time goes by.
Canada ships well over 65% of it’s exports in the form of heavy oil to the US at the rate of 4 million barrels a day. We do not have the refining capacity to bring the oil to market so it is refined in the US and some of it is shipped back with a hefty mark up. The oil (dirty as it may be) is needed to fuel trucks, ships and planes. I do not see how a tariff applied at the border benefit anyone.
Sorry guys but I have to rant. I have a trip to Florida coming up and I really don’t want to go but at this point I cannot cancel. I have however cancelled a trip in March to the US. I really have a bad feeling about what is going on right now. The 800 pound gorilla may feel he is winning for now but losing many friends and allies.
