As a citizen of a random country that (apparently) hasn’t fought a war in the last 30 to 40 years,

shouldn’t that be something for me to be proud of? Isn’t JD supposed to be on the side of peace, yet he’s denigrating a country because it has been peaceful? And just because it hasn’t fought a war, why should that mean that it’s troops aren’t battle ready – another random country famous for its neutrality, independence, ski resorts and banking gnomes which hasn’t fought a war for over 500 years seems to have a respected, capable military.

And for all his bluster, JD forgets the fiasco of another random country holding the US hostage in 1979, when American lives were lost in a totally bungled humiliating rescue operation. Anyone with half a brain knew that if you wanted to do an operation like that you would use the SAS or the Israelis (Entebbe, 1976). And in 1982 my random country did just that, fighting a brief but decisive war over 8,000 miles away, despatching the fleet at three days notice without help from any allies (the US denied intelligence support) including the longest range bombing missions ever carried out (even the refuelling planes needed refuelling). And the random country won, with a lasting peace which JD is so roundly criticising – and which the US has been unable to achieve anywhere.

Having said all that, I think it’s good that he has tried to bring a sense of reality to a group of people who seem to be living in the 19th century as far as their perceived geopolitical importance is concerned. Keir Starmer is named after Keir Hardie, the founder of the Labour Party in the late 1800s. The Europeans are all pedalling furiously to try to appear relevant as though they are a powerhouse  – yet really their record is one of continuously fighting each other and Russia for the last thousand years in hundreds of petty wars – and Britain allying itself with Russia for major wars against France and Germany (twice); at one point Britain was fighting against Sweden in one war, whilst simultaneously fighting with Sweden in another!
