metal vapors can be health hazards. breathing them, even in tiny concentrations, not advised. having worked around welding, i have some experience with this.
many metals, such as iron, zinc, etc form soluble compounds in the body and can be easily flushed out. some, however form insoluble compounds, and can build up to unhealthy, even lethal levels. notably mercury, cadmium, lead, chromium, etc.
most people don’t encounter these hazards, but if you’re, say, having a bracket welded onto your chromed bumper, be sure to stay well upwind. filters and dust masks are of limited effectiveness
