I had some relatives on my moms side who got out of Hungary prior to WW11 as a great grandma saw the signs. Not just Christians and Catholics as my Great Grandma was Catholic who I gave a couple of her silver rosary crosses to two nephews when they got older because their mother half American half South American born in SA who died young was catholic. Doctors overlooked she had pneumonia and I was out of town over a death of a relative at the time. Couple others for grandchildren later. Family mixed in religion and if Jewish didn’t get out they went straight to the ovens.
They helped refugees ” real ones” coming in when they lived in Illinois from Hungary and other places.
Later met a girl in Denver a little older than me they knew who was Hungarian who was a child in the 50 s who told me how scary it was. How people were shooting st them and people around them getting shot and she could hear people crying. She said the most dangerous time she remembered was getting through a fence.
