Re Forsyth
Well spotted, he has been strongly against the EU for decades….Great writer…like our own Farmboy a genuine wordsmith.
Was reading some letters the other day in one of our papers and thought to myself, Wow !!! Whoever this is they can really write…got to the end and saw it was from Frederick Forsyth.
He has also lived one hell of a life, according to his recent autobiography.
SIR – Some years ago I stood at the edge of a graveyard in a small town in Pennsylvania. I did so because it was the spot where, on November 19 1863, the greatest of all the US presidents, Abraham Lincoln, delivered the immortal Gettysburg Address.
Towards the end he urged those listening to dedicate themselves to a concept: that “government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth”. If he had meant government by a remote, unelected, bureaucratic committee, why did he not say so?
And why did a far lesser president, knowing perfectly well that the American people would never tolerate such government, come here to tell us it should be good enough for the British?
If only the voters next Thursday, even entering the polling booth, would simply say to themselves, “I shall vote that government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from our British earth,” our elective democracy would not be subordinated to the Brussels commission for much longer.
